Dr Emmanuel Okpo is the Regional Deputy Director for Health Protection in UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), formerly Public Health England, North East region, England. Dr Okpo received his medical degree from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria Nigeria, an MPH degree from the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and his Fellowship in Public Health Medicine from the Faculty of Public Health, Royal College of Physicians in the UK. He has extensive global (clinical and public health) experience, having worked in Africa and Europe. Prior to joining Public Health England (now UKHSA) in December 2020, he worked as a Consultant in Public Health Medicine for the National Health Service (NHS) in Grampian, Scotland (2010-2020). He also served as the Clinical Lead & Head of Health Protection (2017-2020), Executive Lead for Sexual Health & Bloodborne Viruses for NHS Grampian (2012-2020), and the Public Health Specialty Training Programme Coordinator for Grampian (2011-2020). At Scottish national level, he served on many committees including chair of the Scottish Health Protection Network GI & Zoonosis group (2018-2020), member of the High Consequence Infectious Disease subgroup of the SHPN Health Protection Preparedness Group (2018-2020), chair of the SHPN GIZ Giardia Subgroup (2018 – 2020), member of the Verocytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) Action Plan Implementation Group (2013-2019), member of the Scottish Government Health and Social Care Directorate COVID-19 Nosocomial Review Group (2020), member of the Scottish Committee for Specialist Training in Public Health (2011-2020), and member of the University of Aberdeen Public Health Teaching Team. Dr Okpo is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Public Health at the University of Aberdeen. He continues to contribute to teaching and supervision of undergraduate medical and postgraduate students. He is actively involved in mentoring students and played a key role in the founding of the postgraduate mentorship programme, “Success Plus” at the university of Aberdeen. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA, 2018). He has authored and co-authored several peer review articles and was recently awarded the prestigious UK Faculty of Public Health Presidents Medal for outstanding services to Health Protection. Dr Okpo’s specific interest includes gastrointestinal infections, zoonoses, new /re-emerging infections, sexual health and blood borne viruses.
